A2 PE Sports Injuries Flashcards
Describe and explain the effect of hyperbaric chambers on the performers body
Increases partial pressure of oxygen (100%)
Blood and haemoglobin is fully saturated with O2
Oxygen dissolves in the plasma fluid
Reduces swelling
Increases white blood cell concentration at injury site.
Name three methods of rehabilitation for injured athletes
Oxygen tents
Hyperbaric chambers
Ice baths
Describe the method of using an ice bath.
Sitting in ice cold water between 5-20 minutes
Blood vessels tighten // vasoconstriction
The blood flow to the muscles is restricted
Once out of the bath blood floods to the muscles
Oxygen is then used to remove lactic acid
How can DOMS be reduced?
Active warm up and active cool down Avoid eccentric muscle contractions (plyometrics) early in session Gradually increase intensity of workout Massages Ice bath
What type of athlete may use oxygen tents, and why?
Endurance athletes
Reduced partial pressure of oxygen
Similar to altitude training
Stimulates the release of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO)
What are the advantages of using oxygen tents when injured?
Maintain aerobic fitness through EPO production
Increased O2 carrying capacity - more red blood cells and haemoglobin
Maintain fitness whilst injured
What precautions can an athlete take to reduce the chance of becoming injured?
Avoid overtraining - allow for recovery time
Apply principles of training - SPORT / LTAD
Tape or use supports for weak joints
Correct nutrition and fluid intake
Ice baths and massages
What is DOMS?
The delayed onset of muscle soreness
What are the physiological benefits of using an ice bath?
Reduces swelling
Reduced blood flow to the area by vasoconstriction
After leaving ice bath area is flooded with new blood - vasodilation
Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to remove lactic acid and repair damaged tissue.
