A2 - Part 2 Storage devices Flashcards
What is Storage device and name 4 types
Peripheral device used for storing, backing up and sharing data for individual use when the network is not available
the 4 types of storage device are: Hard Drive, SSD, USB, and Optical Disks
What is HDD and state advantage and disadvantage
Hard disk drives are magnetic storage devices, commonly used as the primary internal storage device but can be external.
👍 Large storage capacity (1 terabyte or more)
👍 Low cost on a per byte basis.
👍 Very reliable.
👎Slower than SSDs at loading data.
👎External HDDs are not as portable as some other options.
What is SSD and state advantage and disadvantage
Solid state drives are flash memory devices commonly used as the primary storage in portable computing devices like tablets and laptops.
👍 Very fast data read/write speeds
👍 Low power consumption.
👍Extremely reliable as they have no moving parts which can be damaged.
👎Higher cost than HDDs on a per byte basis.
👎Usually have a lower storage capacity.
👎Only have a finite number of writes.
What is SD card and state advantage and disadvantage
SD cards are small flash memory cards that are commonly used for storage in digital cameras and some smartphones.
👍 Very small and portable.
👍 Easy to transfer between devices with SD card readers.
👎Very small storage capacity, generally around
64gb - greater capacity is costly.
👎Various ‘enhancements’ to the standards resulting in potential compatibility problems for example SDHC and SDXC.
What is USB and state advantage and disadvantage
USB memory sticks are small flash memory devices that connect through a USB port.
👍 Extremely portable device.
👍 Compatible with most computer systems via USB ports.
👎Storage capacity is low when compared to SSDs and HDDs.
👎Only have a finite number of writes before they break.
👎Because they are small, they can be lost easily.
What is Magnetic tape and state advantage and disadvantage
Magnetic tape is used for large data backups.
👍 Very large storage capacity.
👍Very cheap on a per byte basis.
👎Data is accessed serially which is very slow.
👎Requires specialist equipment for recording and reading data.
What is Optical Disk and state advantage and disadvantage
Optical disks such as CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray disks are used for software, music and movies.
👍Small and portable.
👍A lot of devices have built in capability to read optical discs, with external devices being inexpensive if needed.
👎Archival stability of writable media can be questionable.
👎Fragile and easy to damage.
Advantage of removeable storage
Portability (1) because storage devices are small and lightweight which makes them easily moved from one location to another (1)
Security of data (1) because most removeable storage devices come with data encryption technology (1)
Require no power (1) because they rely on the power from the device they will be plugged into (1)
Cost efficient (1) because no subscription or membership is needed (cloud storage) (1)
Data can be accessed offline / anywhere (1) whereas if used cloud storage he would need an internet connection (1)
Characteristics of Internal Storage Devices
SSD’s Vs HDD’s
Portability Factors
Size / bulkiness /weight
SSDs use a system of interconnected flash memory chips that can be built on to the motherboard/main board making it compact.
Power Consumption
SSD uses less power than HDD leading to a longer battery, as read/write operations do not require the system to run motors to drive HDD spindles, read heads, etc. life
Speed
An SSD is faster than a HDD, which would be very important when processing images.
Storage Space
1 TB is far larger than 256 GB which would make it far superior in storing large image files such as photos.
