A.1.1.2 (Endocrine System) Flashcards
Hormones
Secreted by glands and interacts with receptors to regulate bodily functions
Circulating hormones
Travels through the blood streams
Local hormones
Acts on neighboring cells (NO BLOOD STREAM)
Autocrine hormones
Targets itself (local)
Paracrine hormones
Targets nearby cells (local)
Endocrine hormones
Targets distant cells (circulating)
Diencephalon
Thalamus+Hypothalamus (sends electrical signals to the pituitary gland)
Pituitary gland
Master gland (releases hormones that travels to another gland to tell it to release its own hormone
Thyroid gland
Growth (stimulated by the pituitary gland)
Adrenal gland
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine (stimulated by the pituitary gland)
Pancreas
Insulin and Glucagon (created by the pancreas)
ADH
Kidney is told by ADH to retain water (ADH is stimulated by the pituitary gland)
Ovaries 1
Oestrogen (spikes at late follicular phase *after period)=(when low) joint stiffness, less bone density, we rely on fat because we have oestrogen
Ovaries 2
Progesterone (spikes at luteal phase *before period)=(when high) increase in body temp, worse sleep quality, especially fat reliant
Testes
Testosterone=stronger bones, muscle growth, EPO (ensures body has enough oxygen-carrying red blood cells) *can push harder in exercise
