A.1.1.1 (NS) Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain + Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Nerves
Afferent neurons
Picks up information and sends to brain (sensation)
Efferent neurons
Sends information from brain to muscle (responses)
Autonomic NS
Involuntary responses
Somatic NS
Thought-out responses
Sympathetic NS
Fight or flight (speeds things up)
Parasympathetic NS
Slows things down
Breathing/Ventilation
Afferent: chemoreceptors in the medulla oblongata
CNS: chemoreceptors sends more action potential to the respiratory center in the pons
Efferent: CNS tells diaphragm
*autonomic&sympathetic
Temperature
Afferent: thermoreceptors all around the body
CNS: thermoreceptors tells hypothalamus
Efferent: CNS tells body (vasodilation, vasoconstriction)
Blood pressure
Afferent: baroreceptors in the aortic arch and carotid arteries
CNS: baroreceptors tells medulla oblongata
Efferent: CNS tells blood vessels (vasodilation, vasoconstriction)
Heart rate
*heart has intrinsic excitation abilities (SA node creates its own electrical signals=automaticity)
SA node->Bachmann’s bundle->AV node->bundle of His->Purkinje fibers->pulmonary artery OR aorta
