Definition of Personal Computers
Personal computers are those which are general purpose and are available in a large range of specifications and prices
Standard features of PC
Webcam Internet access Media software Speaker Integrated microphones Mouse Ports (e.g. USB port)
Differences between desktop and laptop (5)
Desktop:
Larger than laptop but tends to last longer before need of repair or replacing
Often have to purchase monitors and other accessories
Direct power source
Easier to upgrade - by installing new power source, graphics/sound card and additional RAM
Processors can be more powerful
Laptop:
Small and portable creating convenience for use
Self contained unit - no additional parts are needed to run it
Runs on a rechargeable battery
Harder to upgrade, much of the internal hardware is difficult to access, remove or replace
Laptop processors have nearly caught up with desktop processors, but are still limited
What is Mainframe computer? (include example)
A large system used by organisations
e.g. IBM system
What is Supercomputer? (include example)
A particularly powerful mainframe computer that processes specific data
