A.1 Kinematics Flashcards
Scalars
Quantities that only have a magnitude
Vectors
Quantities that have both magnitude and direction
Distance
How far you have travelled
Displacement
The distance travelled in a particular direction (How far and what direction you are from your starting point)
Speed
The rate of change of distance (distance/time)
Velocity
The rate of change of position (displacement/time)
Acceleration
Rate of change of velocity (change in velocity/time)
distance and displacement units
m
speed and velocity units
ms^-1
acceleration units
ms^-2
instantaneous speed
the rate of change of distance at one particular time
instantaneous velocity
The rate of change of position at one particular time
instantaneous acceleration
The rate of change of velocity at one particular time
average speed
the speed over a period of time
average velocity
the velocity over a period of time
average acceleration
the rate of change of velocity over a period of time
Acceleration of freefall
9.8ms^-2 downwards

velocity
what is the gradient equal to on a speed time graph
acceleration
what is the area below the line equal to on a speed time graph
total distance travelled
what is the gradient equal to on a velocity-time graph
acceleration
what is the area below the line equal to on a velocity time graph
total displacement
what is the area below the line equal to on an acceleration-time graph?
change in velocity
Projectile
An object moving through the air under the influence of only one force- gravity. Its trajectory will be a parabola
Reasons for the trajectory of a projectile being a parabola
- its vertical component of velocity is always changing due to the downwards force of gravity
- its horizontal component of the velocity is constant (assuming no air resistance)
What does the trajectory of a projectile look like with air resistance?
-shorter range
- lower max height and reached earlier
- steeper gradient on the way down
