Positive face- Desire to be valued
Negative face- Desire not to be imposed upon
Grice’s Maxims
Quality- Be truthful
Quantity- Say the right amount, not too much or too little
Relevance- Talk about things relevant to conversation
Manner- Have clarity in communication
If you ‘flout’ these maxims it causes conflict
