A01 neural mechanisms on eating behaviour Flashcards
What are the 4 subtitles for the role of neural mechanism
Homeostasis
The later la hypothalamus
The ventromedial hypothalamus
Neural control of cognitive factors
What is homeostasis
It is the body’s tendency to maintain a constant internal state by returning the situation to its optimal state
Talk about homeostasis in terms of eating behaviour
Glucose levels plays the most important role in producing feelings of hunger
As hunger increases glucose levels increase
Therefore a decline in glucose levels in the bloodstream activates the lateral hypothalamus increasing feelings of hunger so person searchers for food
Increases glucose levels in the bloodstream activates the ventromedial hypothalamus increase feelings if satiation which inhibits person from searching for food.
Talk about the lateral hypothalamus
Damage to the lateral hypothalamus leafs to aphasia, this results in more craving for food. It’s the on switch
Neurotransmitter neuropeptide y turns on eating if it is injected in to the lateral hypothalamus even if satiated. This also causes obesity if kept injected.
Talk about the ventromedial hypothalamus
Damage to the vmh causes animals to overeat or hyperphagia
So the stimulation of the vmh inhibits feeding
So It’s the off switch of eating.
Who found out that when npy is injected into hypothalamus th rats begin feeding even when satiated.
Wickens
Talk about the para ventricular nucleus or the pvn
Damage ti the pvn alone causes hyperphagia
And is responsible for many of out cravings
Who found out the stuff about ovn
Gold
What are the 2 sections for the neural control of cognitive factors
Amygdala
Inferior frontal cortex
What is the role of amygdala in neural mechanism in eating behaviour
Helps us select food based on previous xp
Who supported claims of role of amygdala
Rolls and rolls
What did rolls and rolls do and find
That when the amygdala in rats was removed they began to eat familiar and unfamiliar things indiscriminately
What is the role of the inferior frontal cortex
Recieved message from the olfactory bulb which is the part of the Brian responsible for smell.
Who tested role of inferior frontal cortex
Kolb and whishaw
What did lol and whishaw do and find
That damage to the inferior frontal cortex decreases eating because if the decreased sensory responses to food odour
