A Watery World Flashcards
List ways HIC’s use water for agriculture, domestic and industry
Agriculture: drip feed sprinklers, automated irrigation
Domestic: baths, toilets and appliances
Industry: Cooling machinery
how does an increase in the standard of living affect water use
it increases the use of water
list 5 things that cause an increase in use of water due to a better standard of living
- Greater mechanisation: more water is needed to cool machinery etc.
- More people can afford labour saving devices such as washing machines and dish washers
- more water is used for luxuries e.g. swimming pools
- Increased personal hygiene; we have moved to a showering society
- increased leisure and tourism e.g. water parks and spas
what is meant when a country has water surplus
it means that the country has more water than they need
what is meant when a country has water deficit
it means that the country has less water than they need
list 4 water supply problems in HIC’s and examples if possible
- loss of water from broken or old pipes e.g. London
- seasonal variability (low rainfall at peak times) e.g. Spain
- spacial variability (high rainfall in less populated areas)
- quality (fertilizers and leakages could pollute the water supply system)
list 3 ways water is managed in HIC’s (domestic industrial agriculture)
Water meters
Recycling of water
Drip feed sprinklers
what is appropriate technology
technology that is suitable to the social and economic conditions of the geographic area
what are 3 examples of appropriate technology
.boar holes
.hand water pumps
.hippo roller water project
