Q

What made the effects of the disaster worse?

A

Many of the countries affected were LEDCs These countries did not have the money, organisation or technology to predict, plan for and cope with major natural disasters. For example there was no tsunami warning system in place for the region. If people had known that the wave was coming many thousands of lives may have been saved.

Q

Name three responses to the Indian Ocean tsunami

A

The Indian Ocean tsunami led to the biggest disaster relief effort ever known. Help came from all over the world; it included food, shelter, medical supplies, machinery, expert assistance and money.
International relief organisations tried to get blankets, tents, clean water, food and medical supplies in as fast as possible. This was not easy as local airports and roads had been destroyed.
Governments also gave help. They provided trained personnel, helicopters, lorries, heavy machinery and emergency supplies. They also gave a total of £3.7 billion to the disaster relief programme. Much of this money was put to long-term needs such as rebuilding schools and hospitals and restarting industries destroyed in the disaster
