Paragraph 4 chapter 1

A

Tugann sé léargas dúinn ar na caitheamh aimsire a bhí acu sa Ghaeltacht le linn a óige. Sa dea-aimsir, chaith siad a lán ama ag imirt peile le chéile ar an mbóthar. Chuir siad clocha síos mar chuaillí cuil. Ghlac daltaí ó rang a trí anuas go dtí na naíonáin páirt sna cluichí agus bhí buntáistí mór ag na buachaillí móra. Tugtar cur síos taitneamhach greannmhar ar na cluichí. Bhí siad chomh fíochmhar leis na troideanna! Ní raibh rialacha ar bith ann. Ní raibh fol áirithe ag éinne, bhí gach duine ar thóir na liathróide. Ba mhinic a bhí slua timpeall an chúil cosúil leis an gclibirt sa rugbaí. Tá greann le feiceáil sa chur síos. Níor chaith éinne a lán ama ar an liathróid mar i bpreabadh na súl bheadh slua timpeall orthu agus na mhinic a fuair siad buille san aghaidh. Ba bhuntáiste eile é ingne fada géara gan amhras leis an méid scríobtha a bhí ar suil.

Q

There is an insight in the story in the childrens outlook and the humour they get out of it. There is humour in the answers given to the inspector. For example when he questions the son of the sturdy teller what answer his father would give on the seanfhocal “is fear país te ná poll”. There was reluctance on poor Vincent but in the end he answered “dá mbeadh paiste ar do pholl bheadh deabhard ort dá scaoileadh”

A

We see that Mike is a clever person because he was able to explain to the examiner how many days in the month of February and why it changed every four years. We see the influence of rural life aswell because his father was seasonal fisherman.

Q

He gives us an insight of the time he spent in the Gaeltacht when he was young. They spent a lot of time playing football together on the road. They were violent in the fights. There wasn’t a lot of rules then. He described the football game. He remembers the crowd around the goal like a gclibirt in rugby. You have the ball and in the blink of an eye there’s a crowd and you lose the ball. Humour can be seen in this description and it’s clear Mike was happy in the Gaeltacht.
