A/T Flashcards
What are three major components in A/T?
Torque converter
Planetary gear set
Hydraulics
What is the purpose of an A/T? (5)
Transfer power Gear ratios Neutral Reverse Auto shift
What are 4 purposes of a torque converter
Provide a fluid coupling connection between engine and trans
Multiply torque
Drive oil pump
Provide mechanical lock up
Name the parts of a planetary gear set
Internal gear
Sun gear
Planetary carrier
Planetary pinions (3)
What locks the output shaft when the vehicle is in park?
Park pawl
What is a benefit to having more gear ratios?
Keeps the engine at optimal RPM
Name 5 ways to classify A/T
# of speeds Longitudinal or transverse mount FWD or RWD Relative torque Electronic or Hydraulic control
What is static friction?
The resistance of motion between 2 objects in contact
What is kinetic friction?
The friction between two objects that are moving in relation to each other
What is fluid friction?
The amount of friction of a solid passing through a liquid
What is the coefficient of friction?
The amount of friction existing between two materials
What are 3 components of a torque converter?
Pump/impeller
Stator
Turbine
What does the impeller do in a torque converter?
Pumps the oil at engine speed
What does the stator do in a torque converter?
Redirects the fluid in vortex flow
Is stationary in rotary flow
How does an Automatic transmission change gears?
Hydraulic and electronic systems apply and release bands and clutches; holding or driving planetary gear members
How is output speed calculated?
Input speed divided by gear ratio
How is output torque calculated?
Input torque X gear ratio
