A study of encoding Baddley 1966 Flashcards
Aims
In 1966 Murdock wanted to see if the memory of words was affected by the number of words each person can remember
Procedures
103 students took part and were tested in groups over a number of different sessions.
He selected 4000 words from engalands most common words
I’m each session participants would have to listen to 20 different word lists the lists varied from 10-40 words
After that each participant would have to recall the the words they had just acoustically encoded
Results
The words at the beginning of the list and right at the end were most commonly remembered whereas in the middle of the lists the recall decreased
Conclusion
Participants remembered the beginning and end of the lists and and majority could not recall - or had a significantly lower score- the middle
Evaluation
The reason they had different recall was because the start of the list will be in the participants long term memory and the end of the list will be in the participants shot term memory.
