A priori and a posteriori arguments Flashcards
A priori arguments
An argument based on reason alone (before sense experience)
A posteriori arguments
An argument based on sense experience and observations of evidence
What is the a priori argument for the existence of God?
Ontological argument
What are the a posteriori arguments for the existence of God?
Teleological and Cosmological arguments
Strength of a priori arguments
Does not depend on sense data; relies on logic and reasoning
Weakness of a priori argument
It may not be possible to argue from the unknown to the known
Weakness of a deductive argument
If we deny the premises, the conclusion is not valid
Strengths of a posteriori arguments
It argues from the known to the unknown; relies on sense/observation
Weakness of inductive arguments
It can only lead to a probable conclusion
Weaknesses of a posteriori arguments
The same evidence can be interpreted differently; need to keep checking the evidence (it may change)
Deductive argument
The premises must logically lead to the conclusion
Inductive argument
The premises do not necessarily lead to the conclusion
