A&P: Spinal Column Flashcards
The spinal column purpose
provides structure and support for the body and houses and protects the spinal cord
The spinal cord is essential for:
movement, sensation, and vital functions,
There are ___ vertebrae in the spinal column
33
The five divisions of the spine are:
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacral, and Coccyx
Cervical
Neck (7 vertebrae)
Thoracic
Thorax, ribs upper back (12)
Lumbar
Lower back (5 vertebrae)
Sacral
Back wall of pelvis (5 vertebrae)
Coccyx
Tailbone (4 vertebrae)
Thorax
The chest
Bones of the thorax form internal space called
thoracic cavity
Thoracic cavity contains
heart, lungs, and major blood vessels
Thorax function
protect vital organs the thoracic cavity contains, with 12 ribs attached to the 12 thoracic vertebrae
Ribs
12 ribs, 10 pairs attached to sternum (breastbone), 2 floating ribs (no anterior attachment)
Sternum is divided into 3 sections:
the manubrium (superior portion), the body (center portion), and the xiphoid process (inferior tip)
Pelvis
The pelvis is joined posteriorly to the sacral spine
Pelvis contains
bones that are fused together: the ilium, ischium, and the pubis
The ilium
is the superior bone that contains the iliac crest, which is the wide, bony wing that can be felt near the waist.
The ischium
is the inferior, posterior portion of the pelvis
The pubis
is formed by the joining of the bones of the anterior pubis.
Hip
the joint where the femur joins the pelvis
The hip joint consists of
the acetabulum (the socket of the hip joint) and the ball at the proximal end of the femur
