A&P II Exam-1 (Chapter 20) Flashcards
The Circulatory System: Blood Vessels and Circulation
1
Q
What are the three principal categories of blood vessels?
A
- Arteries - Carry blood away from heart and get smaller as they get closer to capillaries
- Veins - carry blood back to heart
- Capillaries - Connect smallest arteries to smallest veins to create a circuit and off load nutrients & O2 and pickup waste & CO2
2
Q
Walls of arteries and veins have three layers
A
(tunics): 1). tunica interna, 2). tunica media, 3). tunica externa
3
Q
Tunica interna (tunica intima)
A
- Lines the blood vessel and is exposed to blood
- Endothelium - Simple squamous epithelium
4
Q
What type of blood does veins carry?
A
all veins carry deoxygenated blood except for pulmonary veins and umbilical veins
5
Q
What type of blood does arteries carry?
A
not all artieries carry oxygentated blood-all do except pulmonary and umbilical arteries
6
Q
Tunica media?
A
- middle layer
- consist of smooth muscle
- large vessel
- Lumen is circular
7
Q
Tunica externa?
A
- also call tunica adventitia
- connective tissue
- Anchors the vessel and provides passage for small nerves, lymphatic vessels
- Vasa vasorum: small vessels that supply blood to outer part of the larger vessels
8
