League of Nations
International peace organization, included allied war powers and 32 Allied and neutral nations, Germany and Russia were excluded
self-determination
allowing a country’s people to decide for themselves under what government they wished to live
Treaty of Versailles
1919- created by the League of Nations, between Germany and the allied powers
Russia left out of League of Nations
They were left out because of their early withdrawl from the war and and its Revolutionary leadership
War Guilt
Article 231 - Placed sole responsibility for the war on Germany’s shoulders. They had to pay for reparations to the Allies.
US did not ratify Treaty of Versaille
Was rejected because many Americans didn’t agree with the settlements, the League of Nations and just wanted to stay out of European affairs.

US cited from Washington’s Farewell Address: League of Nations was not as powerful without the US.

Treaty was “a peace built on quicksand”. Did give way. Two decades later the bitterness of the treaty plunged the world into another major war.
