Check for airways if patent

A

See if it is safe to approach
Wear appropriate PPE
Hello sir/ madam can you hear me - shake them - if unconscious

look listen and feel
look for chest and abdominal movements
LISTEN AND FEEL - for airflow through mouth or nose

if conscious - try communicating

Check the airways , and see if any obstructions

If fluids then suction and turn patient to side ( unless if the have spinal fracture )

attach a pulsoximeter

Check for breathing ?

A

look for general signs of resp distress : Tracheal position
Any use of accessory muscles
any central cyanosis
look for jugular venous distention

Respiratory rate
Saturation of oxygen
Check for equal bilateral chest expansion , pattern and depth
Auscultation
Percussion

ensure high flow oxygen of 15l per min through NBM

Check for circulation

A

Heart rate
Blood pressure
Temperature
Capillary refill time (<2sec) also check the sternum
Check for pulse - regular , volume , rate

Urine catheter

If sepsis (tacycardia , lactate , hypotension not just spiking temp) - blood culture

if BM <4 = 50ml of 10 percent glucose IV ,
if necessary give further odessa every minute till patient gains consciousness
of 250ml of 10 percent glucose
( I’m infection glucose can be high - stress response )

See any rashes or wounds
Any pedal edema

Abdominal examination - auscultation , palpate
If distended and painful to touch - analgesia , call the surgeons , CTAP
