A+ Core II 3.0 Troubleshooting Flashcards
What is a Windows Stop Error (AKA blue screen of death or BSOD)?
A screen that is displayed when there is a significant issue on that Windows device.
What are some reasons a Windows Stop Error or Blue Screen of Death would appear?
Bad hardware, bad drivers, bad application
How can you troubleshoot a BSOD if the problem is related to software?
*You can try and run the Last Known Good Configuration
*You can restore the system to rollback the operating system version
*You can rollback whatever driver may be causing you issues
How can you fix a BSOD when problems occur during startup?
*Try booting in Safe Mode, which starts Windows in a basic state
What is the Last Known Good Configuration?
A feature that gives access to the computer when it’s not able to boot on its own
How can you remedy a BSOD when the problem is related to hardware?
*Reseat the hardware=Remove the device and reinstall it
*Remove hardware entirely
When troubleshooting a BSOD, what should you do when the issue persists after you have performed troubleshooting?
You may want to run hardware diagnostics. These can be provided by the manufacturer or BIOS may have this integrated into it.
How should you troubleshoot a device with sluggish performance?
*Start with Task Manager, check for high CPU utilization and I/O
*Check that Windows is updated with the latest patches and drivers
*Run an anti-virus/anti-malware scan
*For laptop devices, check fans and any other components that aid in temperature control
*Check to ensure the laptop is not using the power-saving mode, as this can throttle the CPU
What are some reasons for boot errors on a device, and how can we go about troubleshooting these issues?
- “Can’t find operating system”
*Boot loader replaced or changed
-Check boot drives to ensure they’re properly connected
-Startup Repair
-Modify the Windows Boot Configuration Database
What is the Windows Boot Configuration Database?
Allows you to configure your system manually. You can run the Recovery Console by running the command [bootrec.rebuildbcd], which will rebuild the boot configuration database
If your Windows system is missing NTLDR, what can you do to help this issue?
*Windows Startup Repair
*You can manually copy the files directly to your system
*Disconnect any removable media that may be causing issues
How can you troubleshoot a device that isn’t starting because its missing an operating system?
Run Startup Repair or manually configure BCD store.
If Windows is booting to Safe Mode unintentionally, or it’s not starting properly, how can we fix this?
Run Startup Repair
If you have hardware installed into your computer and it isn’t starting, how can we troubleshoot this issue?
*Check Device Manager and Event Viewer to see if whether or not the hardware is working properly
*If an issue is found, try removing or replacing the driver for that piece of hardware
If your device displays “One or more services cannot start”, what does this mean, and how can we go about troubleshooting this issue?
This error message means that an important background process cannot be started (these are what you see in the service tab inside Task Manager). To remedy this, you perform the following steps:
*Try manually starting the service from the services option
*If the service is still not starting, check the account permissions to ensure the user account has permission to run that service
*Confirm the service’s dependencies, as it may need other apps/services running to run
*If the issue is associated with a Windows service; check the system files
*If the issue is associated with an app service; reinstall the app
What are some ways to troubleshoot applications when they crash?
*Check the Event Log
*Check the Reliability Monitor
*Reinstall the app
What are some ways to troubleshoot if you’re getting low memory warnings?
*Close large-memory processes
*Increase virtual memory
What is the Reliability Monitor used for?
This app can give you a view of how an app has been performing over time
What is virtual memory?
This is a memory management technique that involves temporarily moving info that is memory off onto your storage drive.
What are endpoints?
Buffers on USB devices, you can think of these as the resources used by your device to run and use USB devices.
When you’re trying to use a USB device, but the device keeps displaying ‘The controller does not have enough resources for this device’ what does this mean? And how can we fix the issue?
When this message is displayed, this means your computer has run out of endpoints, or resources to run the device. If you receive this error, you can perform the following tasks to troubleshoot;
*Move the device to a different USB interface
*Match the USB interface to the device’s capabilities
If your system is displaying a lot of instability such as software errors, system hangs (or freezes), and app failures, what can we do to troubleshoot these issues?
*Run a full diagnostic
*Run a hardware diagnostic
*Check the operating system
*Run SFC (System File Checker)
*Perform an anti-virus/anti-malware scan
What is SFC (System File Checker) in Windows?
A system file checker tool is used to scan files for corruption.
How can we deal with a computer’s time drift?
Enable automatic time setting: Settings> Date & Time
Why is it that rebooting a device is such a common troubleshooting solution?
When restarting a device, the system’s memory registers get refreshed, making them ready to start over
What is a memory leak?
A class of bug in an app where an app fails to release memory that is no longer needed, making it unavailable to other apps and processes
Where do you go if you need to repair an app that may be missing important files?
Control Panel>Programs and features
What does repair, reset, and uninstall do for your apps?
Repair
*Install missing files
*Replace corrupted files
*Fix app shortcuts
*Repair registry entries
*Update or reconfigure drivers
Reset
*Remove all app data
*A factory reset/original install
Uninstall
*Removes the app
