A and P chapter 2 Flashcards
What is chemistry?
Study of matter
What is biochemistry?
Chemistry of organisms
Why is a knowledge of chemistry essential to understanding physiology?
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space and has mass (weight)
What are elements?
Is a substance that cannot be broken down to other substances (substance of one or more atoms)
What is the relationship between matter and elements?
All matter is made up of elements
What elements are most common in the human body?
CHON (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen)
What are trace elements?
Essential elements but are only needed in minute quantities.
What kind of a charge does a proton have?
Positive
What kind of a charge does a neutron have?
Neutral
What kind of charge does a electron have?
Negative
Where is a proton located within an atom?
Found within the nucleus.
Where is a neutron located within an atom?
Found within the nucleus.
Where is an electron located within an atom?
Located on the electron shell, is in constant motion around the nucleus.
What gives us the atomic number?
Number of protons
What is an isotope?
An atom of the same element that have a different number of neutrons.(different atomic masses)
What gives us the atomic weight?
Number of protons + number of neutrons
What determines whether atoms will form chemical bonds?
The number and arrangement of their electrons.
What is an ion?
It is a charged particle formed through ionic bonds.
