APIPA
Automatic Private Internet Protocol Address -
A feature or characteristic in operating systems (eg. Windows) which enables computers to self configure an IP address and subnet mask automatically when their DHCP server isn’t reachable.
BIOS
Basic Input Output System -
The program a computers microprocessor uses to start the computer system after it is powered on. It also manages data flow between the computers OS and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and printer.
CDMA
Code Division Multiple Access (No sim card networks) -
A channel access method used by various radio communication technologies. CDMA is an example of multiple access where several transmitters can send information simultaneously over a single communication channel.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - A network management protocol used to dynamically assign an internet protocol IP address to any device, or node, on a network so they can communicate using IP.
DMZ
Demilitarized Zone - A physical or logical subnet that separates a LAN from other untrusted networks - Usually the public internet. DMZs are also known as perimeter networks or screen subnetworks.
DNS
Domain Name Service or Server - A naming database in which internet domain names are located and translated into internet protocol addresses. The DNS maps the name people use to locate a website to the IP address that a computer uses to locate that website.
DSL
Digital Subscriber Line - A modern technology that uses existing telephone lines to transport high bandwidth data, such as multimedia and video to service subscribers. DSL provides deticated, point-to-point, public network access.
DVI
Digital Visual (Video) Interface - A video display interface developed by the digital display working group. The digital interface is used to connect a video source such as a video display controller, to a display device, such as a computer monitor.
ECC Memory
Error Correcting Code Memory - On a high level, ECC refers to a component’s ability to detect mistakes that may occur in data memory without the need to consume separate computing resources.
HDD
Hard Disk Drive - An electro-mechanical data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic storage with one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters coated with magnetic material.
HID
Human Interface Device - A type of computer device usually used by humans to take input from humans and give output to humans. The term HID most commonly refers to the USB-HID specification.
IaaS
Infrastructure as a Service - A type of cloud computing service that offers essential compute, storage, and networking resources on demand, on a pay-as-you-go basis. IaaS is one of the four types of cloud services, along with SaaS, PaaS, and Serverless.
IDE
Integrated Drive Electronics - An electronic interface standard that defines the connection between a bus on a computer’s motherboard and the computer’s disk storage devices.
IIS
Internet Information Services - A flexible, general-purpose web server from Microsoft that runs on Windows systems to serve requested HTML pages or files. An IIS web server accepts requests from remote client computers and returns the appropriate response.
IMEI
International Mobile Equipment Identifier (Used with Global System for Mobiles) - Unique identity number assigned to a GSM device that can be recognized and blocked by the network to which it is connected. It is useful for fraud prevention and to bar access using a stolen phone.
