9.5 Flashcards
what is a catalyst ?
a substance that increases the rate of reaction by providing an alternative pathway that has a lower activation energy
is a catalyst chemically changed or unchanged at the end of the reaction ?
unchanged
what are the two types of catalysts ?
heterogeneous and homogeneous
what is a heterogeneous catalyst ?
- a different phase from the reactants
- different state to the reactants
Increasing the surface area of the heterogeneous catalyst would do what the rate of the reaction ?
increase the rate of reaction as more particles can react with the catalyst at the same time
what is a homogeneous catalyst ?
- in the same phase as the reactants
- are in aqueous in aqueous reactants
how does homogeneous catalyst form intermediate species ?
by reactants combining with the catalyst which react to form products so the catalyst is reformed again
