9.1 Flashcards
define rate of reaction
the change of concentration of a reactant or product per unit time
rate of reaction equation
amount of reactant/ product made over time
what do particles have to do for a successful collisions ?
must collide with sufficient energy
collision theory
- for a reaction to occur the particles must collide in the right direction
- they must have a minimum amount of kinetic energy
what are the four factor which affect the rate of reaction ?
- concentration
- pressure
- surface area
- temperature
define concentration
amount of solute dissolved in a volume of solvent
what is the effect of the change in concentration ?
increases concentration = increases no. of particles = increases the collision frequency = increases rate
define pressure
force exerted by gas particles per unit area
what is the effect of the change in pressure ?
increase pressure = increases no. of particels = increases collision frequency = increases rate
what is surface area ?
amount of substance exposed to the surface
what is the effect of the change in surface area ?
increases surface area = increases the number of collisions = increases rate
what is the effect of the change in temperature ?
particles move faster = more collisions
- more particles have sufficient energy therefore more successful collisions
