Q

Explain overload

A

Time pressure refers to the amount of time available for a task. Workload,
on the other hand, refers to the overall amount of tasks to be performed. If
one has too great of a workload (and time pressure contributes to this),
stress can result. One can also be overloaded if he or she does not
possess the necessary knowledge, skill or abilities to do a task required of
that person.

Q

Explain underload

A

Too light a workload can result in repetitive, boring work and is as much a
stressor as overload. It can also lead to complacency. The combination of

overload and underload in the same job is especially stressful. Fire-
fighters, for example, sit and wait for fires to occur (underload). When fires

do break out, they are stressful and dangerous (overload).
