9.2 Human Performance and Limitations Flashcards
What can happen to your eyes at low levels of illumination?
See in monochrome
What can cause double vision?
Co-ordinated control of two sets of muscles, one for each eye by the brain
However in a fatigued person, this coordination sometimes failed.
What is binocular vision?
Use of both eyes together
How is sound measured?
In Decibels (Dbs)
What can cause permanent hearing loss?
Presbycusis - Natural loss of hearing ability over time
Loss of sensitivity of the hair cells in the cochlea
problems in the conduction of the sound - blocked ears (ear wax etc)
Define noise
Irregular, unwanted and unpleasant sound is called noise
Information processing involves what 4 actions?
- a Stimulis
- Analysis (thinking or cognition) and decision
- action
- feedback
The retina converts light into nervous impulses that travel up the ____ ____ to the brain where the visual picture is built up
Optic nerve
The retina has two types of light sensitive cells called …
rods and cones
What is the primary reason for having 2 eyes?
One reason is protection against the blind spot in each eye. The blind spot is the small area on the retina of the eye where the nerve fibres from the light sensitive cells on the retina lead into the optic nerve.
It is not possible for an image of an object to fall on the blind spot of both eyes simultaneously.
Irregular, an unwanted and unpleasant sound is called
noise
What is a Decibel (dB)
The strength or amplitude of the pressure waves.
Where does conscious decision making occur?
Conscious decision making occurs in a part of our brain known as the central decision-maker
You may be focusing on one gauge and not notice a reading on another gauge nearby.
What is this known as?
‘Task Focus’
Information present but missed
