9 Meninges, venous drainage of brain and CSF Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 layers of the meninges? (outer to inner)
A
- Dura mater - tough fibrous rbidges crevices, attached to skull
- Arachnoid mater - delicate, sealed bag for CSF; bridges crevices
- Pia mater - delicate, dips into crevices
2
Q
What are cisterns?
A
Spaces filled with CSF
3
Q
Name 4 cisterns in brain
A
- Superior cistern
- Interpeduncular cistern
- Cisterna pontis
- Cisterna magna (cerebellomedullaris)
4
Q
What is a cause of subarachnoid haemorrhage?
A
berry aneurysm on the circle of Willis
5
Q
Where is a frequent site of subarachnid haemorrhage?
A
where posterior communicating artery arises form the ICA
6
Q
Why are the roots long at cord end?
A
- S1 root origin close to S1 vertebra
- Vertebral column grows
- S1 root exits well below its origin in the cord
7
Q
Where is it safe to sample CSF?
A
Lumbar puncture (subarachnoid space) - needle puncture
- well below L2
- usually L4,5
8
Q
Charatceristics of veins in brain
A
- thin walls and no valves
- emerge from brain and lie in subarachnoid space
- drain into cranial venous sinuses
- grouped into: eternal (quite variable) and internal cerebral veins
