What is Psycholinguistics?
The scientific study of the psychological aspects of language
What is language’s grammar?
The set of rules that dictate how symbols can be combined to create meaningful units of communication.
What is syntax?
The rules that govern the order of words.
What are semantics?
The meaning of words and sentences.
What is generativity?
The symbols of language can be combined to generate an infinite number of messages that have novel meaning
What is displacement?
Refers to the fact that language allows us to communicate about events and objects that are not physically present.
What is language’s surface structure?
Consists of the symbols that are used and their order
What is language’s deep structure?
The underlying meaning of the combined symbols
What is a phoneme?
The smallest unit of sound that is recognized as separate in a given language.
What is a morphem?
The smallest unit of meaning in a language
What is discourse?
Where sentences are combined into paragraphs, articles, books, conversations and so forth
What is bottom-up processing?
Individual elements of a stimulus are analysed and then combined to form a unified perception
