9. “In A Dark Time” ⭐️⭐️ Flashcards
by Theodore Roethke
Q. What is he struggling with in the poem? explain how it relates to Lord of the Flies.
(Similarity between LOTF and the author’s experience.)
: He is struggling with finding himself in between evil and innocence. This is similar to the boys on the island when Ralph knows hunting is bad but the moment he does it, “Hunting is good”.
Q. What kind of struggles does he go through? We started off in a negative way, but he went through the darkness positively somehow. Talk about at the end of the poem.
: He was struggling to discover who he truly is. The speaker in this context believes that he acquires a certain kind of clarity and insight through the experience of darkness. He uses the darkness as a metaphor to describe inner turmoil, struggles, and challenges. By confronting and navigating through this darkness, the speaker gains a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him. In this sense, the darkness becomes a crucible for personal growth and self-discovery.
Q. How does the narrator go through his struggle?
He was consumed by the darkness but he finally works through and climbs out of his fear.
