9) Glands 2 Flashcards
What and how do goblet cells secrete?
Where are they found?
How do goblet cells appear in H and E
They secrete Mucin
They are found where outside meets inside- GI, respiratory tract, reproductive, conjunctiva of eye.
They appear clear in H and E
3 salivary glands and locations, serous to mucous ratio.
Parotid glands, either cheek anterior to ears. almost completely serous.
Sublingual Glands, inferior to tongue. almost completely mucosal.
Submandibular gland, further posterior and more medial than sublingual. Mostly serous; more mucous
Parotitis, what causes it? How does it present?
Parotitis is caused by an obstruction in the main parotid duct or one of its branches, with further inflammation due to bacterial infection.
It presents with a huge inflammation on one side of the face and upper neck.
How is salivary secretion controlled?
Neuronally from both sympathetic and parasympathetic ANS. Parasympathetic stimulation produces a greater volume of more serous watery saliva.
Sympathetic stimulation yields a thicker more mucosal saliva.
