9. Consuming Energy Resources: Energy Resources Flashcards
What are the types of Energy
Renewable,
Non-Renewable,
Recyclable
What is Renewable Energy?
Replenished in short timescale
Known as flow resources
Different types of Renewable Energy?
Wind - turbines on land and see - large wind farms
Solar - sun energy heats water and solar cookers -> electricity via photovoltaic cells
HEP - falling water trapped by dam - falls through tunnels - pressure creates electricity
What is Non-Renewable Energy?
Can’t be replenished quickly
Known as stock resources
Type of Non-Renewable Energy?
Fossil Fuels - formed over millions of yrs - dead organisms in ground and seabed - extraction is difficult and costly
What is Recyclable Energy?
Made of waste products to generate energy
Types of Recyclable Energy?
Nuclear - Uranium atoms - give off heat when split - boils water - steam turns turbines to create electricity - Breeder reactors can generate more fuel from splitting process - makes it like a renewable source - Radioactive waste used to generate more energy
Biomass - wood, plants etc or animal waste - burn to release energy or to create biofuels. Easy - living organisms grow quickly. Available from farming waste
