What is CBT?
A
- cognitive behavioural therapy
- a talking therapy
- psychoeducation and behavioural modification techniques to restructure unhelpful thoughts and behaviours

Define trauma.
A
Event of actual or extreme threat of physical or psychological harm which an individual experiences as traumatic and which has long lasting effects

What is MDAS?
A
- modified dental anxiety scale
- self report for patients to document the level of anxiety or phobia

What physical body sensations are associated with anxiety?
A
- increased heart rate
- dry mouth
- increased perspiration
- “butterflies”
- flushed face
- increased muscle tension

What thought processes are associated with anxiety?
A
- expectation of failure
- catastrophising
- playing out scenarios in your head
- magnifying and minimising

What behaviours are associated with anxiety?
A
- avoidance
- disruptive behaviour (esp in children)
- increased muscle tension
- safety behaviours (ie emotional water bottle)

How can you break the cycle of your emotions?
A
- name the emotion
- breathing exercises
- relaxation
- “this will pass”
- stepping back and observe situation
- grounding “smell, name what’s around you”

What is the feared hierarchy?
A
- create a fear ladder with situations in order of most scary to least
- exposure to lower level anxiety situations hopefully makes higher ranked situations better in the future

What is graded exposure?
A
- graded
- prolonged
- repeated
- with no distraction (offers escape)
