9. Beams, deflection Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Moment and deflection equation for a beam?

A

Note:
* to solve deflection we must work out the constants using boundary conditions. I.e. for a supported beam on both ends, we know v(0) = v(L) = 0, as they are supported no deflection. Make sure to evaluate each case clearly as they aren’t all the same.
* Also EI is known as flexural rigidity.

Q

What is the issue with trying to work out deflection when there is a load on it using the normal evaluation of BM?

A

The issue is that on each side of the forces you need to write a new equation for the deflection and moment. Meaning we also get many unkowns (>2). This makes it complex and long. Which is why using Macualys method is easier as we only get one equation. This also means only two constants.
