What is the DSM-V
A classification of mental disorders by mental health professionals in the US
What does the DSM-V provide
A menu of symptoms and eets diagnostic criteria based on a number of endorsed symptoms from a list
How do patients meet a diagnostic criteria
Have to exhibit and impairment
Each specific substance is adresses separately under its own disorder (e.g. alcohol/tobacco/stimulant use disorder) EXCEPT
Caffeine
What are the 3 types of disease
Mild: 2-3 criteria
Moderate: 4-5 criteria
Severe: 6 or more criteria
What are some criteria for substance use disorder
- Taking more substances or for longer
- Wanting to quit but not being able to
- Spending lots of time cutting, using, recovering
- Cravings
- Not managing work/school etc bc of substance
- Continuing to use when it causes rs problem
- Giving up social activities bc of use
- Using substance again even when in danger
- Continue to use when yk you have pshycial/psych probelm that could be made worse
- Tolerance
- Withdrawal symptoms
What is early remission
At least 3 but less than 12 months where the person no longer meets criteria (except cravings)
what is sustained remission
12 or more months not meeting any criteria (but cravings)
What is on maintanence therapy
long term maintenance medication to help stay in remission
What age group has highest substance, alcohol and drug use disorder diagonses
18-25
What is multimodal, multi-informant assessment
History of present and past substance use
