9 - Alkanes & Alkenes Flashcards
1
Q
What are AlkAnes?
A
A Homologous Series of Hydrocarbons
2
Q
What is a Homologous Series?
A
A group of chemicals with similar chemical structures
3
Q
What is the general formula of Alkanes?
A
C(n)H(2n+2)
4
Q
What are the first four Alkanes?
A
MethAne (CH₄)
EthAne (C₂H₆)
PropAne (C₃H₈)
ButAne (C₄H₁₀)
5
Q
What are AlkEnes?
A
A Homologous Series of Hydrocarbons with one C=C bond/functional group
6
Q
What are the first four Alkenes?
A
EthEne (C2H4)
PropEne (C3H6)
But-1-Ene (C4H8)
But-2-Ene (C4H8)
(but-1-2 can be called ButEne)
7
Q
How do you test for AlkEnes?
A
Bromine water
When shaken together, alkene will decolourise bromine (orange -> colourless)
Happens as bromine is added across the double bond
