Q
mechanism:
How antiphospholipid AB syndrome induces thrombosis….
A
- interfere w/ endogenous anticoagulants
- Binding and activation of platelets
- interact w/ endothelial cells and induce the expression of adhesion molecules and TF
- Activation of the complement cascade??? - but there is no classic inflammation so this is questionable!

Q
Criteria for antiphospholipid AB syndrome
A
1 of the vascular/pregnancy criteria and one lab criteria.
1st criteria options:
- Vascular thrombosis,
- unexpected death of fetus at or beyond 10th week,
- 1 or more premature births before 34th wk,
- 3 or more consecutive spontaneous abortions.
and 1 of the following:
- lupus anticoag
- Anticardiolipin IgM or IgG.** will be false +ve for syphilis in lupus pts, coz syphilis has an anticardiolip AB** .. This is also assoc. with high risk of thrombosis.
- Anti Beta 2- glycoprotein-1 ABs of IgG and or IgM isotype
