9/11/24 Flashcards
Brainstem
medulla pons and midbrain
important for controlling cardiac, respiratory, sexual functions and arousal levels
Reticular formation
pain, reticular activating system
necessary (but not sufficient) for consciousness
Cerebellum
motor control, fine motor movements
Thalamus
sensory filter
Thalamocortical loops implicated in consciousness
Limbic system
hippocampus: consolidation of memories into long-term storage
Amygdala: rewards and emotion
Hypothalamus regulates autonomic nervous system
Cingulate Gyrus: emotion, pain, motivational responses
Neocortex
Outermost layer of tissue, contains association cortex
newest in terms of evolution
NCCs: Neural correlates of consciousness
Measure some neural aspect of neural functioning and then correlate it with reports of conscious experience
Contrastive method: compare measurements of neural function when perception/action is conscious vs not
measurements have been made ranging from single molecules to large-scale assemblies of neurons
Binocular rivalry
when you give the left eye one picture and the right eye
In a healthy, typical brain, the pictures do not merge or fuse together
each eye gains access to consciousness when flipping between images
Binocular rivalry studied in macaques
V1 responds to input but not perception
MT, V4 responds to perception
