9/1/22 Flashcards
Irritability or Excitability
How easy a muscle can contract
Contractility
ability to contract and develop force against resistance when stimulated
Extensibility
ability for muscle to be passively stretched beyond its normal resting length
Elasticity
ability of a muscle to return to its origins length following stretching
Action
specific movement of joint results from a concentric contraction of a muscle which crosses joint
Innervation (nerve)
Nerve going to muscle
- Segment of nervous system providing stimulus to muscle fibers within a specific muscle
Gaster (belly or body)
central, flashy portion of the muscle that generally increases in diameter as the muscle contracts
Tendon
cordlike connective tissue in appearance, connects muscles to bone and other structures
Ligaments
connect bone to bone
Aponeurosis
Binds muscle together to connect muscle to bone, connective tissue resembling flattened tendon
Fascia
thin casing of connective tissue that holds every organ and muscle in place
Retinaculum
retains tendons close to the body
Origin
proximal attachment of a muscle or part of body closest to midline (least movable part)
Insertion
distal attachment or part furthest from the line of the body (most movable part)
Contraction
when tension is developed in a muscle as a result of a stimulus
