8K — Energy transfers Flashcards
What does the amount of thermal energy in something depend on?
— How hot it is (its temperature)
— The material it is made from
— Its mass
What is evaporation?
When a liquid turns into a gas.
1) What is conduction?
2) What is convection?
3) What is a convection current?
1) Conduction is the way energy is transferred through solids by heating.
2) Convection is the way energy is transferred through fluids by heating.
3) A flow of liquid or gas caused by part of it being heated or cooled more than the rest.
What is infrared radiation?
A way of transferring energy by heating that does not need a medium (material). Infrared radiation can travel through transparent things and a vacuum (empty space).
What is a Sankey diagram?
A diagram showing energy transfers.
1) What is power?
2) What is power measured in?
1) Power is the rate at which energy is transferred.
2) Power is measured in watts (W) or
kilowatts (kW). One watt is one joule of energy being transferred each second.
What is payback time?
The payback time is the time taken for the cost of installation to be matched by the money saved.
1) What is temperature and how is it measured?
2) What is internal (thermal) energy, and what is it measured in?
1) Temperature is how hot something is, usually measured in degrees Celsius.
2) Internal energy is the energy stored in the movement of particles. It is measured in joules.
