8E — Combustion Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon is a compound containing only hydrogen and carbon.
1) What is combustion?
2) What is oxidation?
1) Combustion is when a fuel burns.
2) Oxidation is reacting with oxygen.
What are the three parts of the fire triangle?
The fire triangle contains oxygen, heat and fuel.
1) What is complete combustion and the word equation?
2) What is incomplete combustion and the word equation?
1) Complete combustion is when a fuel reacts completely with oxygen.
Hydrocarbon + oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + water
2) Incomplete combustion is when a fuel reacts partially with oxygen.
Hydrogen + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water + carbon monoxide + carbon (soot)
What is acid rain?
Acid rain is rain water that is made more acidic by dissolved sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
