8d - Kingdoms Flashcards
How are organisms classified?
Organisms are classified into five kingdoms. Viruses are not living and so are not in a kingdom.
What are the parts of a cell?
The parts of a cell include cytoplasm, cell membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, cell wall, and chloroplasts.
What are microscopic fungi?
Microscopic fungi include organisms like yeast, which reproduce asexually by budding.
What is a characteristic of unicellular organisms?
Unicellular organisms can only grow to a certain size due to limitations in diffusion.
What types of respiration can unicellular organisms use?
Unicellular organisms can use aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration (fermentation).
What role do decomposers play in the carbon cycle?
Many unicellular microorganisms are decomposers and play a part in the carbon cycle.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
The equation for photosynthesis is carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen.
What conditions do microorganisms need to grow well?
All microorganisms need warmth, food, and moisture to grow well. Some need light for aerobic respiration.
What are producers in a food chain?
Photosynthesising protoctists are producers in a food chain.
How do some protoctists move?
Some protoctists move using pseudopods, while others use cilia and flagella.
What happens to a population when resources run out?
As glucose starts to run out, the population stops growing and levels off.
What do decomposers do?
Decomposers break down dead plant and animal material, releasing nutrients back into the environment.
