8B Flashcards
1
Q
how does fMRI work
A
- it functions in a similar way to MRI, the difference is that it allows brain function to be studied in real time
2
Q
what are the central and peripheral system
A
- central system consists of brain and spinal chord
- peripheral system consists of the neurons which extend to the rest of the body
3
Q
how does PET work
A
- uses radioactive traces, which collects areas where there is increased blood flow
4
Q
what is parkinson’s disease
A
- it is caused by loss of neurones these neurons produce dopamine which is involved in muscle control, less dopamine is released therefore no dopamine will bind to the receptors for sodium ion channels to open, different type of drugs are used: dopamine agonists, Dopamine precursors (L-dopa) and enzyme inhibitors which will prevent breaking down of dopamine
5
Q
what is depression
A
- people with depression have low levels of serotonin, other chemicals like noradrenaline and dopamine are involved in
- antidepressants work by increasing the levels of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine
