Social Influence Definition
How people change their behavior or attitudes due to the direct or indirect influence of others
Define Group vs Collective
Group - two or more people who interact and influence each other
Collective - gathering of people who have minimal interaction
Define Status and Power
Status - Is the importance of an individual’s position in a group as perceived by members of the group.
Power - Is an individual’s ability to control or influence the thoughts, feelings and behaviour of another person
Define Obedience
a form of social influence that involves acting on the orders of an authority figure.
The likelihood of obedience increases according to the status, authority and/or power of a person which can be identified through symbols and uniforms
What factors effect obedience? (3)
Group Pressure - An occurrence in which other members reveal whether they are obedient to the authority figure or not.
Social Proximity- The closeness between two people.
Legitimacy Of Authority Figure- Authority figure who has a higher position or status
Define Conformity.
The tendency to adjust one’s thoughts, feelings or behaviors in ways that are in agreement with those of a particular individual, group or social norms.
