8.6 Acid Base Properties of Salt Solutions Flashcards
Can salts affect the pH of a solution?
Yes
What happens when a salt dissolves in water?
They dissociate into individual hydrated ions that may or may not affect a solutions pH
What can affect the pH of an aqueous solution?
The anion, cation, or both
Define hydrolysis
A reaction of an ion with water to produce an acidic or basic solution (hydronium or hydroxide ions)
Which salts do NOT affect the pH of a solution?
Cations of strong bases (like Na+, K+)
Anions of strong bases (like Cl- and NO3-)
What kind of salts form acidic solutions?
Cations that form hydronium ions in solution (such as NH4+)
What kind of cations tend to lower the pH of a solution?
Conjugate acids of weak molecular bases
Why do some metal cations hydrolyze and act as acids?
Highly charged small ions form acidic solutions like Al3+, Fe3+, etc
Why do highly charged small ions form acidic solutions?
The density of their high charge increases the POLARITY of the -OH bonds
Which salts form basic solutions?
Anions of weak acids
When a non hydrolyzing cation and an anion that’s the conjugate base of a weak acid are combined will form what?
A basic aqueous solution
Which salts act as acids and bases?
Some salts containing the cation of a weak base and the anion of a weak acid can both hydrolyze
What is NH4+ to NH3
A conjugate acid to a weak molecular base
What is CN- to HCN
A conjugate base to a weak acid
What happens to the hydrolysis of a metallic oxide?
Produces a basic solution in water
