8.3 Quantities and units Flashcards
What does SI stand for?
» The international System of Units
What is the base SI unit for Mass?
» Kilogram - kg
What is the base SI unit for length/displacement?
» Metres - m
What is the base SI unit for time?
» Seconds - s
What is the base SI unit for speed/velocity?
» M, s ^-1
What is the base SI unit for Acceleration?
» Metres per second squared
What is the base SI unit for weight/Force?
» Newton
» Kgms^-2
In which direction does the weight of an object act in?
» Act vertically downs, the weight is equal to mass x g
In which direction does the normal reaction act in?
» Acts perpendicular to the surface when an object is in contact with the surface
In which direction does friction act in?
» Acts in the opposite direction of which the motion is moving in, acts between the 2 rough surface
In which way does tension act in?
» The direction in which the object is being pulled along by a string, the force is called tension
What is thrust/compression?
» If an object is being pushed along using a light rod, the force acting on the object is called the thrust or compression in the rod
What is Buoyancy?
» Upward force on a body that allows it to float or rise when submerged
What is air resistance?
» Opposes the motion, usually opposes the direction of the weight of the object
