8.2.4 - Mains Electricity Flashcards
Is the earth wire connected to the mains?
No.
What is the earth wire connected to?
A large pole underground - ‘earth’
What does the BRown wire represent?
The live wire.
What does the BLue wire represent?
The neutral wire (pin).
What is the mains voltage?
230V.
What frequency do generators in power stations produce an A.C of?
50Hz
What could the live wire touch is it comes loose?
The casing.
Why is the live wire touching the casing a problem?
The casing is live.
What can happen if you touch the casing once a live wire has touched it?
230V could travel through you because you are connected to Earth.
How does a plug prevent (to do with a wire) 230V traveling through you if you touch the casing that has been touched by the live wire?
The earth wire has a lower resistance than the human body.
How can a plug prevent (to do with the casing) 230V traveling through you if you touch the casing that has been touched by the live wire?
The casing can be made out of plastic, so that no current flows.
What is it called when the casing is made out of plastic?
Double insulated.
