8.3.1 - The Big Bang Flashcards
What happened in 1829?
Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies were moving away from each other.
What did Edwin Hubble use to make his discovery?
The red shift.
The more distant the galaxies are, are they faster moving or slow?
Faster.
As a light source moves away from you, what happens to the wavelength of the light it emits?
Increases.
As a light source moves away from you, what happens to the frequency of the light it emits?
Decreaces.
If the source is moving faster, what is bigger?
The red shift is bigger.
If the source is moving towards you, what is the light?
Blue-shifted.
What does the Big Bang model claim the Earth started from?
Something extremely dense and smaller than an atom that expanded suddenly.
What was discovered in the 1960s that supports the Theory of the Big Bang?
That there was microwave radiation coming from all directions, left over from the Big Bang.
