TYPE OF GROUPS: Family and friendship groups
FAMILY:
- Spend time together
- Engage in activities
- Know each other well
FRIENDS:
- Spend more time together than families
- More short term than families as they drift apart.
TYPE OF GROUPS: Sporting and leisure groups
- May be long term
- Purpose is to provide fun, interact ways to get fit and healthy, to address personal well-being.
- Members rely on others to stay motivated
- May be age specific
TYPE OF GROUPS: Study and work groups
- Engaging, well-being is satisfied
- Assist each other in groups
- Share interest
- Discussion and sharing
- Work as a team to accomplish goals.
TYPE OF GROUPS: Religious groups
- Formed around religious beliefs, tradition and values.
- different forms of teaching and practices
TYPE OF GROUPS: Cultural groups
- Cultural and ethnic groups are based on the geographical areas where the groups orientated.
- They share social and cultural characteristics.
TYPE OF GROUPS: Other specific groups
Groups that include:
- Health
- Financial status
- Age
- Education
- Gender
- Class
May be the basis for the formation of a group.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: locality/geography
- Group members being in a specific area.
E.g. Walking group in blue mountains surf club in manly.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Gender
- Most common cause of group formation.
E.g. Boys soccer team. - Access to some facilities might be limited.
E.g. Female only gym.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Security
- Enhances the well-being of individuals.
- Individuals often stay close to others.
E.g. In a neighbor hood to feel safe and severe.
Chinese community living in Chatswood.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Sexuality
- LGBTI people often form social groups in response to share beliefs.
- They may also live in neighbour hoods.
E.g. Newtown, inner city (oxford st)
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Specific needs
- Local communities have groups for new mothers, baby groups, fitness groups.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Social interaction
- Some groups are simply formed so people can ‘hangout’ who share similar beliefs.
REASON FOR GROUP FORMATION: Culture
- The opportunity to reflect, celebrate culture.
- Cultural practices added to cultural well-being.

- Through common beliefs, people often form religion groups.
E.g. catholic church.
