Hornbostel-Sachs System
Classifies instruments by their sound source:
-a vibrating string
-column of air
-membrane
-electronic means
-the instrument itself
Western Symphonic Classification
divides instruments into strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, keyboard, or electronic instruments
Chordophones
Instruments that produce sound via vibrating strings (ex. guitar, ukulele, etc)
Aerophones
Instruments that produce sounds via vibrating columns of air (e.g. trumpet)
Membranophones
Instruments that produce sounds via vibrating membranes (e.g.drums)
- membranes may be struck or rubbed
Idiophones
instruments that produce sounds by vibrating themselves (e.g.castanets)
Electrophones
Instruments that produce sound via electronic means (e.g. synthesizer, electric guitar)
Metallophone
An instrument that produces sound from a piece of metal, such as tuned metal bars, tubes, rods, bowls, or plates
