8.1.2 Cerebral Dominance Flashcards
What is cerebral dominance?
Some functions are represented more prominently in one hemisphere in comparison to the other
Give two examples of cerebral dominance
95% of people, left hemisphere dominant for language and mathematical/logical functions
95% of people, right hemisphere dominant for body image, visuospatial awareness, emotion and musical ability
BEVM
Why is cerebral dominance important?
Allows us to predict effects of lobe lesions e.g. what side a lesion most likely came from
What does the corpus callosum do in cerebral dominance?
Allows communcation between the two hemispheres
Giving an average of the two hemispheres
What is alien hand syndrome?
Destruction of the corpus callosum, two hemispheres become completely independent from one another e.g. right hand will do up buttons while left undoes them
