8.1 Force and acceleration Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion
Objects either stay at rest or moves with constant velocity unless acted on by a force
An object moving at constant velocity is either:
Acted on by no forces
The forces acting on it are balanced so the resultant force is zero
How to investigate how the velocity of an object changes if it is acted on by a constant force
Use a dynamics trolley and a motion sensor connected to a computer
The computer is used to process a signal from the motion sensor and to display a graph showing how the velocity of the trolley changes with time
Trolley pulled along runway using elastinc bands stretched to same length
Sloped just enough to compensate for friction
Velocity should increase at constant rate
Results of investigation on how the velocity changes if it is acted on by a constant force
F is proportional to ma
F=ma
What is Newton’s second law
F=ma
What direction is acceleration the same as
The direction of the resultant force
Equation linking weight, mass and gravity
W=mg
The mass of an object is a measure of its…
…inertia
What is inertia
An objects resistance to change of motion
